The Relay

A perfectly smooth black sphere lies half-buried in a lava tube at the Moon’s south pole. It emits nothing. It answers nothing. The instruments examining it disagree — and none reports an error.

Eight thousand light-years away, an astrophysicist discovers the same impossible structure in a distant nebula. There is no signal to decode, only a relation to reconstruct, while the world races to name what it does not yet understand.
